Rooibos Tea, also known as red tea, or red bush tea, is made using leaves from a shrub called Aspalathus Linearis, which is usually grown on the western coast of South Africa. Rooibos is an herbal tea, and not specifically related to the green or black tea category. Traditionally, rooibos is made by fermenting the leaves, which turns them a red-brown color. However, you can also get green rooibos that’s not fermented. The unfermented green rooibos tends to be grassier in flavor than the traditional version of the tea.

Health Benefits Of South African Rooibos

Rooibos Tea Contains Antioxidants

Rooibos is associated with good health due to its high concentration of health-promoting antioxidants. Antioxidants may help protect cells from damage by free radicals. The long term effects of antioxidants may reduce your risks of serious health conditions such as heart disease and cancer.

Rooibos Tea May Boost Heart Health

The abundant presence of antioxidants in rooibos is linked to a healthier heart. Drinking red tea may have beneficial effects on blood pressure by preventing angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE). Angiotensin-converting enzymes indirectly increase blood pressure by causing your blood vessels to contract. Also, there’s more substantial evidence that rooibos tea can improve cholesterol levels, thereby protecting you against various heart conditions, including heart attacks and strokes.

Rooibos Tea May Reduce Cancer Risk

The antioxidants quercetin and luteolin, which are present in rooibos tea can kill cancer cells and prevent tumor growth. While efforts are still ongoing to determine whether the tea packs enough of these two antioxidants, it’s believed that regular consumption of rooibos tea can inhibit growth of cancerous cells in the body.

Rooibos Tea Can Help With Weight Loss

When you think of teas for weight loss, green tea is often the first that comes to mind. However, herbal tea, rooibos, specifically may be just as effective when it comes to burning fat. Like green teas, rooibos tea is caffeine-free, and contains catechins like epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), a compound in green tea linked to burning fat.
