Health Benefits
Soothe a Stormy Stomach
Spearmint is a common folk remedy for indigestion, vomiting, nausea, and gas. This is thanks to the compound carvone, which soothes muscle spasms and contractions in the digestive tract. Spearmint can also be used to relieve abdominal pain, bloating, or stomach discomfort. For chemotherapy patients, it offers a welcome reprieve from nausea and vomiting.
Antioxidant-Rich
Antioxidants help prevent and repair free radicals, harmful molecules that can lead to oxidative stress over time. Oxidative stress has been linked to chronic health conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, and cancer.
Spearmint contains a rich quantity of antioxidant compounds like rosmarinic acid. It also contains abundant amounts of flavones and flavanones like menthol and limonene. This makes it an excellent defensive measure against free radicals.
Hormone-Balancing
Spearmint tea can assist women with hormone imbalances. Studies have shown that regularly consuming spearmint tea can reduce testosterone and increase the female hormones instrumental in ovulation and healthy body processes. While it’s not a replacement for hormone treatment for those who need it, it can augment other necessary health measures.
Closely related to its hormone-balancing properties, spearmint tea has even been found to reduce facial hair in women – a common component of hormone imbalances.
Sharpens Memory
Spearmint tea doesn’t just feel invigorating to drink. It can also help sharpen your memory, especially for older adults. Spearmint can improve learning and memory. This is particularly beneficial for adults with memory impairments.
Reduces Stress
Spearmint tea is used in many South American countries as an herbal remedy for stress and insomnia thanks to its menthol content.
