Health Benefits
Soothe a Stormy Stomach
Peppermint in all its forms (including brewed as a tea) is a popular folk medicine remedy for digestive problems including gas, bloating, indigestion, and even irritable bowel syndrome. It’s an excellent medicine cabinet go-to on sick days, or just when you’re feeling a tad under the weather.
May Help Freshen Breath and Improve Oral Health
Peppermint tea contains peppermint oil, which has been shown to help bad breath. This is thanks to peppermint’s antibacterial properties, which help kill bacteria that encourage dental plaque buildup. In combination with its pleasant smell, this can make it a helpful remedy for bad breath, as well as assisting oral hygiene in general. If using peppermint tea for this purpose, drink it unsweetened for maximum benefit.
Relieves Pain from Menstrual Cramps
Peppermint is a natural muscle relaxant. Studies have found that peppermint extract is as effective as NSAID pain relievers in reducing pain duration and intensity, and peppermint tea, which contains many of the same compounds, could have the same properties. A cup of warm peppermint tea can be a soothing, natural part of your period pain relief routine.
May Improve Concentration and Mental Sharpness
A handful of small studies have shown peppermint oil to be effective concentration aids, and peppermint tea contains peppermint oil. Next time you’re preparing for a difficult test or memorizing an important presentation at the office, try sipping a warm cup of peppermint tea while you study. It will soothe your mind and can help you feel more alert.
